"Free" country does NOT mean, "you don't have to pay for it." It means, you are free to fail or succeed on your own merits and you are free to criticize the government without fear of persecution. I can think of one rather large North American country that has been "free" for a couple hundred years and which has had an active draft, whenever necessary, during that entire period.
