Are stories and threads about the latest shooting anything but entertainment?

Does knowing about them do anything? Can shoot up a school massacreing dozens of little kids and not see gun ctrol come about, so what use is covering incidents involving 1 or 2 people being shot gonna serve? Isn't it just entertainment?
