^ China did serve well in acting as a counter weight to erstwhile Soviet Union. However, it seems like now the a counterweight to China is needed. May be a coalition of Japan, Australia, Philippines and Vietnam with us as nucleus will do the trick. Not sure about the nucleus thought because of heavy reliance of the US on Chinese labor.
