An Education On Government Salaries: Massachusett's State Payroll Descending

massachusetts has a balanced budget requirement as well. they get around it by creating quasipublic authorities and agencies and selling bonds to fund them.
Ouch! Someone should get a prison term or two out of what is occurring there.

While we were working, they created legislation where robbing us is legal and they are protected under the law now. Mandatory salary increases, pension system, etc.

This is Democrats in action. 90% Dem locked legislature for decades and decades. One of the few states in the nation to see a continual drain in population, the middle class and lower class leaving. They have had GOP governors, but the power of the state rests in the State House. The last three Speakers gone for some crime. The GOP were RINOs anyways, we really need an independent voice here. Oh well, just one small state. I would like to see federal salaries unleashed, but they won't budge.

There is a huge problem building with this. I can understand why some would prefer not to face the reality of the situation.

Perhaps folks should do some research before getting outraged.

Titanic Sailor said this:
How does an "assistant" professor with a base of 60K end up making 362K for the year?

From his list that means he could only be talking about Associate (not Assistant) professor David Phillips at UMass.

Even a few seconds of research would have revealed he was talking about this guy.

Care to know how he earns that much money? He's a Doctor, as in medical doctor, with a specialization in Radiology. He makes all his money not from tuition dollars but from his Medical Practice. His $60,000 a year is paid to him because he works with medical students.

Now, if Titanic Sailor had done his research, he'd realize that in this case his OUTRAGE isn't justified. This guy isn't getting rich off student tuition, but he's being fairly compensated for work outside his duties as a teacher.

When folks freak out about Professor earnings, they should take the time to find out how much outside consulting a Professor does, and how much grant money they bring in. At a R1 institution, the Professor's salary isn't paid for by tuition, but instead by the money the Professor brings in to fund his research. Frequently that money pays for the salaries of his graduate students and lab workers too.

In short: Titanic Sailor was looking to get outraged. He didn't care if he came off looking stupid in the process.

So the state gave this jackass 300K to offset his potential losses in the field? Are you shitting me? These corrupt salaries, and the corrupt Dems who run to administration jobs so they can have exorbitant salaries to qualify for the "highest three year salary" pension, are the reason many students can not afford an education at state universities.

It's time for reform, and it's time for review of the current national situation at all levels, universities included.

Fairly compensated by a corrupt system which needs massive reform and common sense. Good luck defending the abuse of the people's money and harming our children's future. A correction is on it's way. .

Do you even read? I think not.

This guy works for the Medical School at UMass. That means he also works in the hospital, in fact you can find a website listing his medical practice here.

In short, you were looking to get outraged before you even did any research on why the guy makes what he makes.

In short, there is a massive correction heading towards all government employees............

hahahaha

You folks are gonna come back down to earth and enjoy life with the taxpayers for a change. ;)

Read this:

In short, if UMass were to tell this particular professor "You make too much!", he could go into private practice and make essentially the same income. Only now, instead of teaching students and sharing his experience, he's just working for himself.

Perhaps its time to find another name on that list to hone in on. You probably could have made the case with an administrator or a beauracrat, but you're digging yourself deeper and deeper here......

Again, perhaps it's time to review the cost of state run universities to the taxpayer, and review whether shutting them down is the best option for our people.

;)

Being in defense of failed government and fighting reform is probably not the direction any sane man would undertake in today's world.............., unless you are a government worker or a hack politician perhaps????

Again, emphasis on "sane man".........

If you were a sane man, or you actually cared about this issue, you'd have done some research before jumping up and down and screaming. Admit it, you didn't even bother to check what these guys do, or what they could make in the Private sector, did you?

speaking of looking stupid, what part of *state payroll* don't you understand?

Perhaps you should think about this for a second.

How much do you think the guy in question generates for the hospital (owned by the state) in his capacity as a Radiologist? How much do you think he generates for the state in grants that Professors routinely write to support equipment, GA's, and facility costs.

I'd put good money down that this guy costs the State a net amount of zero dollars to keep on payroll.

Titanic Sailor's original rant is that this guy is robbing the student's tuition. That's pretty well debunked, so the goal posts have moved to tax payer dollars. However, if you look at the guy in question, that's an outright stupid argument too.

I'm not saying that every single state salary is justified. In fact, looking at the numbers he's posted (in another thread), I think if he'd picked one of the MANY non-MD's on the list he'd have had a decent argument on his hands.

The problem is he picked one guy at random, never actually bothered to do any research about who the guy was or what he did and low and behold, its backfired.

Given the Associate Professor in question that started this conversation is a MD with a specialization in Radiology who works in the state hospital in addition to in the classroom, that he generates income for the hospital in medical fees and for the University in grant money, do you still think his salary is completely out of line?

Keep in mind that in private practice the guy could easily make that much money, and if you fire him, the hospital in question would have to re-hire a radiologist at a comparable rate if they wanted to have one on staff, and this argument looks worse and worse.

If you want to keep going, my suggestion is to look through the list, do some research, and come back. I'm absolutely sure that if Titanic bothers to put the time in, he can find a name and job to pick out that won't make him look completely stupid once its examined.
