The cause of the Islamic state is too complex to be reduced to a simple-minded platitude offered to serve the agenda of whoever is making it.

We didn't "cause" the people involved to marry their close family members for generation after generation, seriously degrading their intellectual ability and emotional stability.

We didn't "cause" the resulting culture built around extended family clans where loyalty is to blood rather than principles.

We didn't "cause" a religion to spring forth as created by an aggressive, murderous warlord that is as much political as it is religious, and which instructs its followers to engage in war.

We didn't "cause" any part of the mindset that is precipitating these actions.

What we did do was to fail to understand the culture of these primitive people and their need for an authoritarian leader to keep their natural tendencies in check. We also failed to realize that it is not democracy that produces a more liberal culture, but a more liberal culture that produces democracy.

All this knee jerk far left propaganda that is so reflexively anti-American misses the mark by as much as any jingoistic far right propaganda that fails to address our role.
