Portrayed in the movie “Selma” as the woman who was severely beaten during what became known as Bloody Sunday, Boynton Robinson was a key figure in the Voting Rights movement. In 1965 she helped organize the marches from Selma to Montgomery. Pictures of her passed out on an Alabama highway, after being beaten on March 7, 1965, helped bring a larger focus to the movement. Boynton Robinson was also the first African American woman to run for Congress from the state of Alabama.
