It is a well known fact that voter turnout is always low in mid-term elections (2014) had the lowest turnout in over 70 years) and the GOP does better when there is low voter turnout.
There was 36% turnout, the GOP won 52% of the vote, the Dems got 48% which led to the GOP to win 57% of the seats.
That means thanks to gerrymaking, the GOP did quite well but it doesn't represent a mandate as the GOP.
Democrats do well when there is a high voter turnout. So in 2016, the GOP is praying for a low voter turnout.
