Additional details about giving rep

There's already a thread somewhere out there about the basics of reps, but I just wanted to point out some additional finer details that might be helpful for a lot of people, especially for our many newer members who are just getting their bearings in USMB.

Yes, we are allowed 20 reps to give within a 24 hour period, but it helps alot to imagine that for each and every of those reps, there is like an invisible time-thread that goes 24 hours and a some extra seconds into the future. This is especially helpful if you wish to give out rep every day.

If you start repping on a Monday and your first rep was at, say, 10:03 am your time, then the next time you will be able to give out rep no. 1 of your 20 would be Tuesday at 10:03 am + a number of seconds.

Ditto for the other 19 of those 20 reps that each of us can give out.

Here's a random sample:

Rep 1: Monday, 10:03
Rep 2: Monday, 10:28
Rep 3: Monday, 12:47
Rep 4: Monday, 12:48
Rep 5: Monday, 12:49
Rep 6: Monday, 20:32
Rep 7: Monday, 20:33
Rep 8: Monday, 20:35
Rep 9: Monday, 20:36
Rep 10: Monday, 20:48
Rep 11: Monday, 20:49
Rep 12: Monday, 20:54
Rep 13: Monday, 20:57
Rep 14: Monday, 20:59
Rep 15: Monday, 21:32
Rep 16: Monday, 21:33
Rep 17: Monday, 21:41
Rep 18: Monday, 21:46
Rep 19: Monday, 21:57
Rep 20: Monday, 21:59

In this imaginary timeline, a member used up all of his/her reps between 10:03 am and 9:59 pm on a Monday. So, it doesn't work as if a member can think, "Ok, tomorrow at 10:03, I can throw out all 20 reps". Nope: each one of those reps is on a stopwatch, so to speak, for 24 hours and some seconds to boot. This is why some people get frustrated and wonder why they get the message "you have given out too much reputation in the last 24 hours".

Some people award rep by spreading it out through the day. Others (which is often my case) like to pass out rep all at once, at the end of the day. I look at the things that members write as the day goes by, and if something really stands out, I bookmark that post and rep it with the rest later. This morning, while sipping my coffee, I noted three really good posts and they are already bookmarked for later this evening.

But if you are ever wondering how much you can rep at any certain hour of the day, just check your CP. Down below are listed the reps you gave out over the last 48 hours or so, time-stamped.

I write "+ a number of seconds", because I believe the USMB clock calculates to the second, but time-stamps only to the minute.

-----------------------------------------------

There is also the "11 reps in between" mechanism: you can first rep the same member again when have awarded 11 other reps in between. If you have a favorite member and always rep that member 1st in the day, then that is never a problem. But if the order of your repping is random, you may suddenly find that someone you really wanted to rep cannot be repped, because 11 other reps did not happen in between.

So, again, imo, it does help some to take a look at the reputation points given list in the CP, just to see where on the list you repped a specific person the last time.

Additionally, because of the "11 reps in between" mechanism, this means that, if you want to, you can rep the same person 5 times within three days. 3 X 20 = 60. 60 / 11 = 5.45. It's just a matter of accurately placing the reps where you want them to be. I'm not saying that people should or should not double rep within a day. I'm just saying that it's possible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And, to add one more positive thought: I don't neg very often and when I do, I have an internal rule within myself that doesn't allow more than one neg per day. But I have had so many days where I could have negged a person for something really ugly, but found just too many other postings that day that were so darned good, at the end of the day, I decided to ditch the idea of negging someone and stuck with positive reps. That has become a helpful method for me in avoiding the "neg-rep complex".

Just food for though. Hope that helps.

(Serious questions. I'm curious.)

The things I've learnt from this thread are:

1. This thread clearly hasn't gone the way the OP hoped it would.

2. By attempting to suggest how helpful and insightful he is, Stat's revealed beyond all doubt how much he needs a life.

3. Wake's an Emo. And a self-harmer (probably).

I've never done or said anyting to or about either one of them. But I do wonder: am I not allowed to have an opinion regarding taking reps too seriously? One is allowed to have a opinion now and then...or maybe not.

I feel your opinion about rep is totally valid and anyone else that said something about rep. I made a joke about it too. That's what this thread is for I think-talking about rep? It just seems that the FZ drama is being brought here also by some folks who wait for certain people to post and pounce on them at every opportunity anywhere they do so.

They need new material badly.

This, absolutely. I experienced it firsthand, too.

It's sad, it's cruel, and it's desperate. And fueled by boredom, or partisan adversity.

For Pete's sake, he made an informative OP about the rep system. Next thing you know, drama. If some people don't like Stat they should take their bad feelings for him downstairs, instead of using this upstairs thread as an excuse to attack him. We're all adults, right? This kind of juvenility is insulting, and our community deserves better.

Finally, someone has the courage and bravery to say what needed to be said. This place has devolved into a snakepit of hate.

As a great man or woman once said "All that evil needs to prosper is for good men to do nothing as innocent posters are negged for no reason."

Thank you, Wake.

You should probably change the title to "Finer points of Rep Circles"

I'm looking forward to his master class.

Maybe, but it's still all about personal freedom at the end of the day. I have the freedom to read what someone says and either let it affect me or not. So does everyone else. Yes, sometimes people write stuff that is so gross, it's hard to overlook. But you would think that in a section like "announcements and feedback", people could behave themselves. Most can, some cannot.

I wonder if people trolled Syrenn's thread about rep when she put it out a good while back. Only, the details from OP can't be found like that in her thread, so I decided to put this one up.

Oh, well, interweebs.

What you've "done", Stat, is vomit-inducing. Whether you're aware of it or not, your OP conjures up an image of a classroom in chaos, with the teacher crying at her desk after failing to control her class. And while the class is in anarchy, the teacher's pet, you, sighs at all the immature indiscipline, rises from his desk and continues to write on the chalkboard what his teacher was writing, with a now calm teacher looking on with bleary-eyed admiration at the example being set before her. Shame it all got ruined after a shoe hit you on the side of the face before page two, so to speak.

Thanks for the thread. I found it to be very useful.
As one can see by the length of time I've been posting here and the total posts, I'm not a big volume poster. About a couple weeks ago I spent a lot of time on USMB and for the first time ever I went over my limit for repping folks.. I just plain didn't know! :dunno:
Also, I agree with Wake and Toro, this place is getting to be a cesspool of hate. Looking at some of the hate posts leads me to believe some people take posting on boards like USMB way too seriously. These people need to get a life,,,seriously. :eusa_shhh:

Guys, though I like your posts in general (I really like Toro's econ posts), this is just plain silly.

The OP expends way too much mental energy on something that is so trivial, as to make the text brick of analysis laughable. Seriously.

I run out of reppies to give all the time. The old give to get axiom at work. At no time have I wasted a moment's energy, scheming on how I might dole out reppies to affect favored posters to the greatest effect. Indeed, to be so bold, I find that attitude quite shallow.

All of that said (perish the thought of being branded a juvenile hater), I will give the OP credit for one thing; he inspired me to pick my butt up from behind this digital mess and go out to experience some actual reality, on a lovely summer-like afternoon.

Thanks to someone who seems to have no life, for reminding me that I do have one. :)
