A Reagan Legacy: Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants

LOL, most of the yougsters do not even know of Reagans amnesty program.
and senility has set in on many baggers and they forgot.

If Reagan knew what we all know now, he would take it back.

A Democratic Congress created the law and Reagan foolishly agreed to it. Any complaints belong on the shoulders of the Democrats that created the law and then "stripped" out the provisions that enforced it.

It was and is a huge failure. We had a couple million illegals when it was passed and it ENCOURAGED millions more to flood this Country on the chance that another amnesty would occur.

Anyone that thinks amnesty is the answer need only look to this and see it is a failure. We went from 2 million Illegals to 10 to 20 million illegals.

We need to secure the Southern Border and then begin the process of kicking out the illegals. ANY plan that does not FIRST seal the border is a failure.

what would have changed his mind?
The obvious failure of it. He'd probably say, "Well, we tried it, and it didn't work. Oh well. Any other ideas out there?"

one his main provisions, fining of companies who hire ilegals, was never put into place. its also one the best methods that could be used to stop illegals from wanting to come here

he did more than agree to it. there are numerous quotes, many in the article linked to in the OP, from him that show his thoughts on the subject.

Reagan said as much himself in a televised debate with Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale in 1984.

"I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though sometime back they may have entered illegally," he said.

sure. he saw the efficacy of allowing those here at the time to put down permanent roots. he saw immigration as a plus which it is. However, on a comparative basis I think you'd find that the issue has exploded, a good thing allowed to bloom beyond our ability to cope, as the games began.

its funny that twice in 20 years major legislation which made it easier to allow illegals/immigrants to become legal and set down roots grew into the monster we have now and that some would like to see a major portion of these folks awarded an aggrieved status on par with African Americans that is as a minority that deserves some special redress.

I don't think he saw that coming.
