A ban on autos? Major cities consider going carless

You would have to triple the mass transit capacity of most cities before trying this.

Imagine everyone entering NYC by car now entering on the mass transit lines.

That's how the majority of New Yorkers commute.

Then why does it take 45 minutes to get over the GW every morning?

Is that what it takes you?

I get over it in about 5 minutes..each way.

By the way..that's people living in New Jersey commuting to New York.

Not New Yorkers.

It's only a temporary inconvenience as people adjust to the new way of getting around. People in countries outside the US get around just fine sans autos.

I dont do the drive.

So the ban on cars would only be cars with NY plates?

I'm not advocating for a ban.

Just saying in a city like New York it's possible.

I personally need to drive through New York City each day to get to my job in Jersey.

It is not possible with the current transit system. If you banned cars in manhattan below 96th street it would take 2 hours each way to get into and out of the city during rush hours. The train lines availible couldnt handle the requried increase in train frequency.

Also remember that the internal transit lines would see an increase as the people driving would not only have to get INTO manhattan, they probably would have to now move AROUND manhattan.
