Or was it not random after all?

Say it ain't so Joe ? Theorys and science still changing? We still learning?

Dark Matter Could Send Asteroids Crashing into Earth: New Theory

Scientists have recently suggested that a thin, dense disk of dark matter about 35 light-years thick lies along the central plane of the Milky Way, cutting through the galaxy's disk of stars. The sun travels in an up-and-down, wavy motion through this plane while orbiting the center of the galaxy

Dark matter could sling lethal meteors at Earth, potentially causing mass extinctions like the cataclysm that ended the Age of Dinosaurs, Harvard scientists say.

Physicists think the mysterious, invisible substance called dark mattermakes up five-sixths of all matter in the universe. It was first detected by the strength of its gravitational pull, which apparently helps keep the Milky Way and other galaxies from spinning apart, given the speeds at which they whirl.

One more meaningless theory that will be refuted in the not too distant future. There will be another meaningless theory replacing this one.

One thing I've learned is that there are some real scientists out there. The rest of the so called scientists are merely good at making stuff up.

It's a conspiracy of scientists...just trying to make money from Big Paleo.

It looks like the AGW propaganda fear monger "the science is settled" cult stayed as far away from this thread as possible.

That 97% number sure gets a lot of use doesn't it....

OK, when are we going to see a Scientific Society state that GHGs are not affecting the temperature of the atmosphere and oceans of the Earth? How about a National Academy of Science, even of Outer Slobovia? Or a major University anywhere in the world?

You mean one of the societies that in 2007 predicted an ice free arctic in 5 years?

One? That number would be zero. Not one scientific society predicted that. Your denier cult myths are wacko perversions of what the science is saying.

Moreover, in spite of the deranged denier cult myths that have you so bamboozled, the Arctic ice is still shrinking in both extent and volume; the trend is still strongly downward, heading towards an Arctic Ocean that is ice free in the summertimes within a decade or so.

On September 11, Arctic sea ice reached its likely minimum extent for 2015. The minimum ice extent was the fourth lowest in the satellite record, and reinforces the long-term downward trend in Arctic ice extent. The nine lowest extents in the satellite era have all occurred in the last nine years. Sea ice extent will now begin its seasonal increase through autumn and winter. In the Antarctic, sea ice extent is average, a substantial contrast with recent years when Antarctic winter extents reached record high levels.

While Arctic sea ice extent is increasing, total ice extent remains below average, tracking almost two standard deviations below the long-term average. Air temperatures at the 925 millibar level were 4 to 5 degrees Celsius (7 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit) above average over the central Arctic, extending towards Fram Strait. Coastal regions were generally 1 to 3 degrees Celsius (2 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than average.

So what scientists was Kerry talking about?

"It is already upon us and its effects are being felt worldwide, right now," he wrote. "Scientists project that the Arctic will be ice-free in the summer of 2013. Not in 2050, but four years from now. Make no mistake: catastrophic climate change represents a threat to human security, global stability, and — yes — even to American national security.

Kerry claims the Arctic will be ice-free by summer 2013

Why don't the AGW cult ever research before they post? They always make themselves out to be fools when it just takes a 5 second simple Google search.....

What's wrong with ice caps melting? Who's to say that isn't normal? After all, we are coming out of a mini ice age. There is also evidence that the earth was warmer in the past. Several degrees warmer. They actually used to raise wheat in Iceland, it was so warm.

Link? Or pulling more nonsense out of your ass?
You mean you don't even know what the people you support have been saying? That's sure sign of ignorance.

Yeah, that's ice free! LOL

What a tard!

Secretary of State Kerry was quite right about the seriousness of the looming threat of 'catastrophic climate change' to our country and the whole world. However, he is a politician, not a climate scientist, and sometimes he repeats information he was given without including all of the details, nuances, and context....and perhaps without the precision that a scientist would have used.

He was basing his remarks on a fairly recent (at the time) study by a team of Arctic scientists led by Professor Wieslaw Maslowski at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California. That study said there was a good possibility of a largely ice-free-in-summertime Arctic happening by 2016 plus or minus three years. Worst case scenario was that it might be ice free by the end of the summer melt season in 2013. The team's research was funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A paper by principal investigator Professor Maslowski in the Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences sets out some of the findings of the research project:

"Given the estimated trend and the volume estimate for October–November of 2007 at less than 9,000 km3, one can project that at this rate it would take only 9 more years or until 2016 ± 3 years to reach a nearly ice-free Arctic Ocean in summer. Regardless of high uncertainty associated with such an estimate, it does provide a lower bound of the time range for projections of seasonal sea ice cover."

All of the rest of the silly propaganda whipped up by the fossil fuel industry shills, claiming that 'all of the scientists predicted an ice free Arctic by 2013 and it didn't (exactly) happen then, so all of climate science must be wrong' was just spun-up malarky, intended to deceive the ignorant and foolish. Most teams studying the Arctic have predicted summer ice free conditions by maybe 2030. There is increasing evidence though that Professor Maslowski's teams' analysis may turn out to be more accurate. According to the NSIDC, air temperatures are 7 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit above average over the central Arctic right now.

Well then. It would seem that Mr Kerry should learn to keep his mouth shut then.

All in all, I would say that he seems to be much, much more accurate and in touch with reality than you are, judging by your BS posts.

Kerry is an idiot. Not to mention a coward and a traitor.

Galactic rotation curves do NOT support the idea that dark matter is concentrated as you have described. Rather:

The distribution of dark matter in galaxies required to explain the motion of the observed baryonic matter suggests the presence of a roughly spherically symmetric, centrally concentrated halo of dark matter with the visible matter concentrated in a disc at the center. --Wikipedia, Dark Matter (Freeman, K.; McNamara, G. (2006). In Search of Dark Matter. Birkhäuser. p. 37.ISBN0-387-27616-5.)

Thus, the sun and the solar system are not regularly piercing a layer of dark matter and our oscillation wrt the Milky Way's ecliptic plane would not be causing regular showers of asteroids.

One of the astronomy docs on Science Channel recently discussed this plane our solar aystem bobs up and down through. Scary stuff.

As clearly demonstrated here, John Kerry is incredibly smarter, immeasurably braver and a far, far better American than you could ever dream of being.

Anthropogenic global warming is a fact. Climate change denial is ignorant, fringe nonsense, rapidly disappearing as the continuously growing mountain of evidence reveals your bigoted stupidity and sends you, in abject embarrassment, scurrying under the slimy rocks from whence you came.
