911 the first plane hit already

"The "Patriot" Act was one of the worst things EVER for our freedoms. "

You know, I hear this statement and many like it made so often. YET, not a single voice raised in outrage that Obama voted FOR the Patriot Act both times it came up for vote and is in the process right now of renewing and expanding it! It boggles my mind the number of things that so many are willing to give Obama a pass for while defiling and berating anyone with an (R) behind their names as the ONLY culprits in their outrage. Sorry, but blatant hypocrisy is not simply a game anymore.

he was NOT a member of the US SENATE when the patriot act was originally voted on or passed?

True.

Obama's record shows he voted against cloture on the reauthorization, then for the eventual compromise legislation.
Not his most shining moment in some regards, but very realistic in others.

found this on wiki about it...

Civil liberties

Obama voted in favor of the 2006 version of the USA PATRIOT Act.[288] He voted against the Military Commissions Act of 2006[289] and later voted to restore habeas corpus to those detained by the U.S. (which had been stripped by the Military Commissions Act).[288] He has advocated closing the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, but has not supported two specific bills that would have done so.[290] Obama still opposes the use of torture[291] and used to oppose warrantless domestic wiretaps by the U.S.[292] He voted against the Flag Desecration Amendment in 2006, arguing that flag burning didn't justify a constitutional amendment, but said that he would support a law banning flag burning on federal property.[293] As of August 8, 2008, the ACLU has given Obama a score of 80% on civil liberty issues for the 110th Congress U.S. Senate.[294]

[edit] USA PATRIOT Act

As noted above, Obama voted to reauthorize the USA PATRIOT Act, which extended the Act, but with some amendments. Such amendments would clarify the rights of an individual who has received FISA orders to challenge nondisclosure requirements and to refuse disclosure of the name of their attorney.

He voted against extending the USA PATRIOT Act’s Wiretap Provision on March 1, 2006. This bill would give the FBI the authority to conduct “roving wiretaps” and access to business records. Voting against this bill would prolong the debate, keeping the USA PATRIOT Act provisional whereas voting for this bill would extend the USA PATRIOT Act as permanent.[295]

[edit] Warrantless wiretaps

Obama had previously opposed legislation that granted legal immunity for telecommunications companies that helped the Bush administration to conduct wiretaps without warrants but later voted in favor of a compromise bill that included such provisions.[296]

It was a horrible day in our history but what was even MORE horrible was the way it was used to push through so much nationa;ism and blind subservience to Bush's agenda. The "Patriot" Act was one of the worst things EVER for our freedoms.

You guys keep saying that yet there are about a million things worse. How was it one of the worst things for our freedoms?

There is an aspect of 9-11 that has always bothered me. There is a wing of Marine F-16 fighters that have the duty of intercepting planes that are in the wrong place. They have done this many times in the past. Yet they stood down on 9-11. How did this happen? What about the rest of the Air Force? Was there an intelligiance breach that we have yet to be told about? There was an exercise that day concerning civilian planes used against targets like the Trade Center and the Pentagon.

In no way do I believe there was complicity in the Bush Administration, other than general incompetance in this as in all things, in the attack. But there may well have been a intelligiance breach that vitally delayed the reaction to the hi-jacked aircraft and the events of that day.
