An 81-year-old Paynes Creek man died today after hitting his head during a fight with another man in the parking lot of the Redding Costco, police said.

Just before 11 a.m. Monday police responded to a report of the fight in the Costco parking lot at 1300 Dana Drive.

There, officers found Robert Leonard Mix lying on the sidewalk in front of the store. He was conscious and speaking with medics, Redding police Sgt. Al Mellon said.

Witnesses told police Mix was sitting in his Dodge pickup waiting for a parking space, which was causing congestion in the parking lot.

Gerald Eugene Carpenter, 70, of Lakehead walked by the pickup, hitting Mix on the arm, Mellon said.

The two began arguing about Mix’s truck blocking traffic and Carpenter challenged Mix to a fight, police said.

Mix got out of the pickup and tried to hit Carpenter with a metal cane but Carpenter grabbed the cane and both men fell.

Mix hit his head on the pavement and was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding, where he underwent emergency surgery for the head injury, Mellon said.

Mix was on life support until he died today, Mellon said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday and police are submitting the case to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office for review.

What a total waste of a life, thanks for the post Gatsie.steve

I saw two old men fight one time - it was really weird.... Awkward would be a better word.

Oddly, or ironically enough it was at a Wall Mart.

Or were they like the boyfriends of the chicks you like totally could have screwed but like didn't want to 'cause they like had boyfriends n shit? I wonder how many beers they can drink!

Was this unfortunate death supposed to be news? Murder is an epidemic in Obama's home town---Chicago. Since 2001 twice as many people have been murdered in Chicago than Americans killed in action fighting for the USA. There are multiple murders every day and somehow the pimps of racial division who showed up for Zimmerman/Martin (Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson) are never around to weigh on the Chicago carnage. This incident would only have had national significance if the dead senior had been black---or perhaps 1/32 Cherokee.

Did you include all your platitudes? Make sure you don't leave any out!

Trying to get into any Costco parking lot is dangerous. Parking lot design at ours sucks. It has one one entrance and exit. I don't know how they even got zoned for it because if there was ever a need for emergency vehicles to get in, forget it, they would have to wait in line. Gas station entrance and exit also runs along this one entrance/exit further backing up the line of cars. One guy stops to wait for a space and nobody moves. Not sayin what the guy did was right but I can understand things getting heated.
