Why is it the government's place to offset things for which people should be providing themselves and for which the reason most can't is due to their own choices in life?

For 50 years under the Great Society programs, $22 trillion dollars has been spent doing what you say should be done. The poverty level prior to the implementation of such programs dropped from about 33% in 1950 to half that BEFORE all the handout programs began. Since those trillions have been spent, the poverty rate, although fluctuations have occurred, hasn't changed on an overall basis. It's still around 15%.

For the record, Harry Reid put the legislature into long term gridlock when he killed over 350 bipartisan bills over 2 years, 50+ of which were authored by Democrats.
