This is why the CDC found that we have 2.4 million defensive gun uses each year, but the FBI only has to keep track of around 230 justifiable dead criminals each year. Criminals are not generally looking for a shootout.... they want to rob, rape or murder you and they want to do it with less muss and fuss......when you can shoot back, they tend to run away. Only the really, terminally stupid, square off against an armed civilian...

Armed Robbers Demand Narcotics, Pharmacist Calmly Prescribes a Bullet Instead - The Truth About Guns

On Monday afternoon, two 22-year-old men, one of whom was armed with a rifle, attempted to procure some free drugs from a Princess Anne, Maryland pharmacy at gunpoint. The pharmacy’s owner, Wasim Amir, was in his office at the back of the store when he heard the commotion. Although he had directed his employees to comply with robbers for their own safety, he walked out with a revolver in his hand to confront the suspects and protect the people in his store.

“The man with the rifle ordered everyone down on the ground,” Amir told reporters, “including one customer, a woman, who happened to be in the store.”

The armed robber pointed his rifle at Amir, but when he realized Amir was armed, he didn’t shoot.

“When he saw my revolver,” said Amir, “he yelled to the other man to run, saying ‘He has a gun,’ and both of them started running away. I fired once in their direction, but it doesn’t seem like anyone was hit.”

Amir is right: he didn’t hit anyone, although the round did shatter his store window. Quick-acting police were able to take the two suspects into custody and charge them with armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

An interesting aspect of this particular defensive gun use is that Mr. Amir says he’s no gunslinger:

“I don’t know much about guns,” said Amir, “but it was a big gun and looked like an assault weapon.”

However, despite not necessarily being a ‘Person of the Gun,’ Amir prudently decided to keep one around in case the need arose. And you don’t need to be a highly trained, operationally operating operator to use one to good effect. The Second Amendment isn’t just for POTG. It’s for every law-abiding resident of the United States.

Amir was more dangerous to those around him than he was to the Bad Guys. The Bad Guys were extremely inept and panicked. If they had been not such bungling idiots, Amir and everyone else there would not be around to get in the news alive. This was just pure blind luck it went well and no one was killed.

Yes.... it is always luck when it turns out, and never the reality that criminals don't want to face armed citizens.

You shouldnt own a gun unless you practice with it or have practiced enough to be comfortable shooting it.
The problem though was not the clerk. The problem is people that commit armed robbery. If they had held him at gun point long enough, there is also no guarantee the gunman would not have gotten nervous and accidentally shot the clerk as well or who knows what else was in their mind.

The wrong person made the statement about the clerk having the gun. The Clerk should have made that announcement in a very loud way. Actually, the rifle was already out and pointed at a person. The handgun should never have been pulled. The ONLY reason that it didn't turn very deadly very fast was the inept nature of the robbers. Every retail store I ever worked at had a standard policy. If a weapon is drawn on the workers, cooperate. Give them the money. Don't resist. The Money can be replaced, a human life cannot. Now, if a bad guy comes into the same store, chances are, he is going to be willing to blow someone away if he even remotely thinks someone might be armed. Some bad guys should not be working as bad guys. If they aren't very good at it like those two, then maybe they should be clerks themselves. Those two give bad guys bad names. If I were a bad guy, I would be very ashamed of them.
