Serge Haroche (born 11 September 1944) is a French physicist. Since 2001, Haroche has been a Professor at the Collège de France and holds the Chair of Quantum Physics. He was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for Physics jointly with David J. Wineland for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems, a study about the light particles, the photons.[1]
Serge Haroche is a French Jew of Moroccan heritage who currently lives in Paris, is married and has two children (aged 40 & 43 years old). His Russian-born mother Valentina Haroche (née Rubleva) was a teacher and his Moroccan father was a lawyer.[2] Both parents were Jews. Haroche left Morocco when it gained its independence from France in 1956. Haroche is member of the French Physical Society, the European Physical society and a fellow and member of the American Physical Society. He is the uncle of French singersongwriter and actor Raphaël Haroche
