Warren Zevon was a quirky genius with "Warewolves of London" and "Roland the headless Thomson Gunner" and he died young of lung cancer so you have to give him a break. The problem is that it doesn't get more offensive than his lame offensive parody of Lynard Skinyard's popular "Sweet Home Alabama". Lead singer and song writer Ronnie Van Zant was killed in a plane crash along with most of the band. Zevon's offensive rant called "Play it all night long" is an obvious attack on the song but why? "Play that dead man's song, play it all night long"? Who says that? "Daddy's doin sister Sally"? Did Zevon have a serious problem with Ronnie Van Zant or was he raped by some good old boy?

Warren had his demons. Mostly drugs AND alcohol. It's a shame because he had so much talent. His first two widely released albums, Self-Titled and Excitable Boy are excellent. And two of the best late 70's releases. It's unfortunate he was such an a**hole at times. He admitted it later after he cleaned up.

I bet Zevon set one record with the song. It's the only time in more than a hundred years of recording history that the word "brucellosis" was ever used by a song writer. Zevon had his demons but he managed to insult Vietnam Veterans and Southern culture and family values all in one package. Why did the powers that be consider recording this garbage?

If Zevon insulted a protected segment of society or a racial minority with a parody song featuring incest, PTSD, cancer and disabled senior citizens there would be hell to pay. Unfortunately it has been open season on the Southern white male for several decades.
