It occurs to me that if you’re brandishing the terms “white privilege” and “white supremacy,” and invoking “implicit bias” such that the indoctrinated must “come to understand” foregone conclusions, it doesn’t sound much like a conversation. More a series of begged questions, whereby some people can be deemed guilty or complicit by virtue of their skin colour.

And yet, if you plan to be a dentist and attend the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, it seems you must first submit to condescension and insults, and accusations of being either a bigot or an enabler of bigotry, based solely on unchangeable aspects of your appearance. Because apparently you can’t do dentistry without the weird political woo of dogmatic parasites who’ve managed to insert themselves into yet another sphere of life.

“As an academic community, understanding the root of homophobia, transphobia, and bias related to actual or perceived sexual orientation and/or gender identity requires intentional study,” said the dental school’s dean, Mark Wolff.

The new fund will “explore research and programming that can lead to best-practice models and suggest policy recommendations that can have profession-wide impact through scholarly publications,” according to the news release.

Is there an epidemic of white dentists giving inferior care to black patients? If not, what the heck is this school even trying to do? It would make more sense if a liberal arts major was denied a diploma because he/she could not pass advanced calculus.

I was a liberal arts major and still passed calculus and was an anti-armor missile systems tech nd took CLEP test while in the army for humanities and took classes in law....

That's great, but most liberal arts majors can't do that.

Anybody who has “poor” or ordinary working-class friends or acquaintenances with children know the headaches and worry caused by expensive pediatric dentistry. Like with general medical care, the reforms of the “Affordable Medical Care Act” have helped more people to get insurance coverage, but it has not overall made dramatically more affordable most medically necessary dentistry, or orthodontal dentistry for children. Poor whites, Latinos and African-Americans all suffer from inadequate dental services.

As a young man, a black acquaintenance of mine — who had graduated college — suffered terrible and embarrassingly misshapen teeth, which hurt his job prospects and self-confidence for decades because his folks never could afford braces. He was lucky, I guess, because many years later he could have his teeth more or less replaced ... at exhorbitant cost.

The hype criticizing those who discuss racial — and class —inequality in opportunities and standards of living usually ignore the lived and experienced suffering that goes on. The hype denounces as “leftist” or “socialist” almost all reform proposals to provide better care and more equal opportunity in society.

As many Americans go out repeatedly getting cosmetic surgery, beautiful smiles and fancy new cars, most African Americans and poor Americans of every background continue to struggle to pay for needed basic medical services.
