We can start with the volcano in El Salvador that cause the Volcanic Winter of 536.



Then the Year Without A Summer in 1816, Mount Okmok in 43 BCE, or even Toba in around 74k bce. Then there are the multiple eruptions of the Yellowstone Hotspot. And add in the current ice age cycles that started around 3 mya. Short of giant impacts tectonic activity and life itself, vulcanism has caused more impact than anything else.

Most geologists are now pointing to vulcanism at the same time as the Chicxulub actually causing the global extinction. Specifically the Deccan Traps. The impact was probably most impactful regionally, but the Deccan Traps affected things globally, for almost a million years.

And much of the claims that are anecdotal are actually wrong.

A month or so back I was talking with my cousin, and she was trying to convince me it was much hotter today than it was when we were kids. I asked her to pick a year at random, and she selected 1977.

And I checked, the record high for 1977 as well as the average temperature for the year were both hotter than it was in 2025. 1976 had an even hotter summer, and 1978 was the same as 1977.

I think a lot of people just look back at things like that in their youth differently. Especially as back then neither of us had AC in our houses.
