I have had this "discussion" for decades. I started running (for cardio-vascular health) when I was 25 and ran until I was 65, and never lost an ounce other than dropping a few pounds of sweat on a particularly long, summer run. Many people have told me I was full of shit, and I have seen scores of advertisements claiming that one gadget or form of exercise will lead to significant weight loss. Now a leading sports doctor confirms what I've known all along...

"The truth is that our expectations are misguided. Large studies show that exercise alone usually produces modest weight loss, often just a few pounds over six months. That’s because your body will “correct” for the extra activity by increasing your appetite or by lowering the calories burned for other bodily functions.

That’s because your body will “correct” for the extra activity by increasing your appetite or by lowering the calories burned for other bodily functions."

The math also proves this finding. Running one mile only burns about a hundred extra calories; one pound is approximately equal to 3,500 calories. You would have to run 35 miles over a period of time and not increase your intake, in order to lose one pound. Ain't happening.

I believe that exercise helps a diet along, which is why diet-plus-new exercise can be effective, but don't buy a new gym membership expecting to lose weight from three sessions a week in the gym. You won't.

There is a relatively new exercise thing showing up on my Facebook feed, claiming that Tai Chi, or "chair Yoga" will magically help old men to lose weight, Gimmeafukkinbreak. That is bullshit on steroids.

Exercise is cool and has many benefits, but losing weight is not one of them.

When I joined the Army I started running PT 5 days a week and I lost 20 pounds.

It all depends on how much you run and how often.

Best way to lose weight that I know of is stay away from carbs and walk every day.

Lots has been said in the last 30 years on the subject.

Fact is that if you burn more calories than you take in, you'll lose weight (and in some cases it's not weight (muscule) you want to lose).

My neighbor has dropped 50 pounds. I never would have guessed he had that much excess. He did it by changing his diet mostly. His calorie density went way down and so did his weight.

There has to be a bit of a lifestyle change to lose weight.

Exercise, especially aerobic exercise is important....regardless for things like heart health.

But even if you lose a bunch, there is a risk of it returning if you have not modified your habits on the long term.

I lost weight because of stress, getting braces, and changing my diet.

I went from 254lbs to 217 in 6 months.

No running. I'm too old to be running all of the time.

Exercise increases both your muscle tone and mass. That muscle mass shows up on the scale.

This has always been obvious to me. I was heavily into CrossFit type workouts a few years back, and I actually gained weight, because I was adding a lot of muscle. My arm, chest, thigh, and shoulder measurements all went up, and my waist and neck measurements went down, but I weighed more when I was training heavily.

I read that article today, exercise provdes multiple benefits but losing weight is really not one of them. The best way to lose weight is to restrict your eating to a 6 hour window every day, it is not that hard for your body to adjust to this and you will really lose weight if you stick to it, as you don't have to count calories.

You can lose weight with exercise, however it is more effective losing weight with a broader approach.

It comes down to burning what you provide in intake.
Weight loss is also not as apparent in short term efforts at exercise, because the more you exercise the more you develop your muscles, and muscles are denser than fat.

Slow adjustments in diet, with routine moderate exercise can turn your muscles into fat burning machines more effectively handling intake in calories and fat, as well as they will eventually start burning what your body has stored in fat more effectively.

There are a lot of reasons why exercise may not help people lose weight, and none of them are good reasons. :auiqs.jpg:

Edit:
If anyone is looking for a low impact form of exercise that can be very effective at providing a little muscle health, toning, significant weight loss, and may still be appropriate at almost any age (consult a physician in your case if necessary) start swimming.

Swimming is great. I quit lifting weights about a year ago, got tired of walking around sore and inflamed all the time. All I do now is swim, walk, bike, and yoga.

I walk and hike often, and quit weights a while back as well.

People need to look into swimming though, because it works everything, and can be pretty fun.
Also, there are options that some people just may not have considered.

A saltwater "endless" pool is easy to maintain and can costs less than a decade's worth of shoes, gear, wardrobe, gym membership, and the gas it takes driving back and forth.

Shoot, you can swim naked if you want to in the privacy of your backyard. :auiqs.jpg:

Golden rule of health...run for the heart salad for losing weight. Replacing 2 big dinners per week with a healthy salad will help lose weight slowly, but surely.

You have to control eating as well but you run intervals you will lose weight. You can even lose weight just by walking.
