In Silicon Valley, 30 years ago, I worked in a PC manufacturing plant. It was all automated, no one actually worked on an assembly line most monitored the automated robots, did statistical analysis to ensure tolerances were maintained and make statistical predictions when a machine/robot was needing maintenance. We had at least 1,500 employees.

Everything in manufacturing today is DCS or PLC controlled.
