I watched "One of our aircraft is missing" a week or so ago and decided research them a bit.

Pretty interesting.

Both sides used the buoys no matter who made them.

When a downed airman raised the flag on the mast signaling the buoy was occupied by a pilot needing rescued.
It was a gamble as to whether he'd be rescued by his fellow countrymen or become a POW.

A wireless was inside to radio for help.....But yeah, it was a coin flip as far as who got there first.
