Snopes quibbles with the exact figures but the overall assertion is pretty sound.

I also notice that they quote people in the UK having financial troubles when they are sick. This is a different thing. Their financial troubles are linked to their inability to work and not outrageous medical bills.

About 2 years ago I broke my ankle in 3 different places. I didnt work at all for 6 months and was part time for about 4 months after that. It was a tight time financially but we got through it. What I didnt have to worry about was paying for medical bills. I posted this on here and somebody put up a bill that I would have been charged if I had been an American. It was astonishing and would probably have caused bankruptcy for me.

How can you live under that kind of stress ?

Most Americans have coverage through their employer. Many buy their own insurance plan. So very few Americans are exposed in such a way. That said, it is still a messed up system.

In order for you to not be under that stress of those medical bills someone else had to suffer the loss of their labor to provide that to you such as fathers who work to provide for their families young adults trying to pay for edu and etc.

BTW my ankle would have cost over £20k.
