Women..you choose...do you prefer a gun...or this...to stop being raped...

I think that the idea is fine. I am for ANYTHING that can help a woman to defend herself. That being said i am kind of surprised that they program it to call friends and family but can't set it up to call 911? Sounds kind of weird. Of course it will take the cops quite a bit of time to get there anyway, but it still strikes me as strange.

i'm going to guess they didn't obtain special permissions to have that capability (yet) ?

maybe pending ironing out some glitches so to speak...

Some girls will actually prefer necklace because it is a mental stress to harm someone especially with a deadly tool like a gun.

the link is full of shit.

if you are about to be raped and you pull a gun and the attacker takes it from you, you are just going to be raped anyway, but if they don't, you won't be.

however

anything is better than nothing

mace, pepper spray? pfft, the cops tell us not to use it b/c it just really pisses attackers off and rarely works

sorry..actual research shows you are wrong...guns are the absolute best way to stop a rape...followed distantly by a knife.

the myth of the easily disarmed victim is just that..a myth.....read the actual research amd read the actual stories.....more oftn the victim disarms an attacker than the other way around...the atteacker has the option of breaking off the attack so his focus isn't as great as the victims...

Guns Effective Defense Against Rape | Womens Voice

However, most recent studies with improved methodology are consistently showing that the more forceful the resistance, the lower the risk of a completed rape, with no increase in physical injury. Sarah Ullman's original research (Journal of Interpersonal Violence, 1998) and critical review of past studies (Criminal Justice and Behavior, 1997) are especially valuable in solidifying this conclusion.

I wish to single out one particular subtype of physical resistance: Use of a weapon, and especially a firearm, is statistically a woman's best means of resistance, greatly enhancing her odds of escaping both rape and injury, compared to any other strategy of physical or verbal resistance.

This conclusion is drawn from four types of information.

First, a 1989 study (Furby, Journal of Interpersonal Violence) found that both male and female survey respondents judged a gun to be the most effective means that a potential rape victim could use to fend off the assault. Rape "experts" considered it a close second, after eye-gouging.

Second, raw data from the 1979-1985 installments of the Justice Department's annual National Crime Victim Survey show that when a woman resists a stranger rape with a gun, the probability of completion was 0.1 percent and of victim injury 0.0 percent, compared to 31 percent and 40 percent, respectively, for all stranger rapes (Kleck, Social Problems, 1990).

Third
, a recent paper (Southwick, Journal of Criminal Justice, 2000) analyzed victim resistance to violent crimes generally, with robbery, aggravated assault and rape considered together. Women who resisted with a gun were 2.5 times more likely to escape without injury than those who did not resist and 4 times more likely to escape uninjured than those who resisted with any means other than a gun. Similarly, their property losses in a robbery were reduced more than six-fold and almost three-fold, respectively, compared to the other categories of resistance strategy.

Fourth, we have two studies in the last 20 years that directly address the outcomes of women who resist attempted rape with a weapon. (Lizotte, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, 1986; Kleck, Social Problems, 1990.) The former concludes, "Further, women who resist rape with a gun or knife dramatically decrease their probability of completion." (Lizotte did not analyze victim injuries apart from the rape itself.) The latter concludes that "resistance with a gun or knife is the most effective form of resistance for preventing completion of a rape"; this is accomplished "without creating any significant additional risk of other injury."

The best conclusion from available scientific data, then, is when avoidance of rape has failed and one must choose between being raped and resisting, a woman's best option is to resist with a gun in her hands.

no where did I make a claim that causes your response to make any sense.

never claimed guns weren't the best defense
never mentioned knives
said pepper spray was nearly useless
and didn't mention the chances of getting disarmed

and the photo is a gun

Yes, loud noises may be effective in making a rapist pause and maybe even run off. So I'd yell at him that I had a gun to give him a chance to run off before I would shoot him. Personally, I'd prefer a gun over a necklace.

Agree. Most rapes occur when female victims is at the stage of vulnerability. Unless she is holding her gun or in her waist at all times....Rapist is not going to make an announcement.... "I'm going to rape you now". These bastard will knock the victim down get the gun then proceed. Training in self defense I think is a lot better which is handy all the time. My wife and my daughter went through these training several times. I physically tested them and they are good but no guns.

That's terrific. I've had some self defense instruction myself. I've also had the dubious honor of having a scumbag hold a knife on me and tell me to take my pants off. There are many things I did, and would do, before I'd fire my gun. I never want to use a gun but I want one in case I have to use it.

Yeah Right.... Is this woman walking around in public with her gun in her hand all the time? Most likely in her purse correct? So if she gets surprise and knocked down in a parking lot. Now what do you do? It's not like hello there miss or madam I'm going to mug or rape you now.
The same thing happened to me when I was rob in Atlantic city casino parking lot. I always practice common sense not to put my self in a vulnerable situations but even that I became a victim. I startled and shocked how fast and where they came from...There is no way I could have pulled my gun from my waist if I had it with me. So I just gave them my watch, wallet and cellphone but nice enough not to take my wedding ring.

I hear you. Still, in answer to the OP question, I'd rather have a gun than a necklace, unless the necklace is a gun.

Something is better than nothing.
That being said, what if no one is close to help you?
Like the old saying, "when seconds count, police are only minutes away"
Im no woman, but I would think gun.

Having a firearm and having the competency and mindset to be able to use it effectively to end a threat in a stressful situation are two different things. If a person trains often...and under varied circumstances, with a firearm, then they have a much better chance of ending a threat. The firearm itself does not automagically make you proficient with it...and it's not just us law-abiding folk that understand that simple truth...the mutts know it too. I'm not saying a firearm isn't a good choice, but if it is your choice don't delude yourself that it's going somehow magically protect you if you are not willing to put the time and effort into training...and have the mindset to use it to kill or injure, if necessary. This applies to all weapons, including your hands and feet. ;)
