Weapons of mass destruction is a somewhat vague term that refers to exceptionally destructive means of warfare. It usually refers to nuclear weapons, biological weapons, and chemical weapons, the so-called ABC weapons (Atomic, Biological, Chemical), or using contemporary terminology, CBRN. In English literature, the abbreviation NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) was used instead of ABC until radiological weapons were also included in the abbreviation for weapons of mass destruction. Nowadays, these weapons are abbreviated as CBRN. In English, the abbreviation WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) is often used, which became widely known in connection with tensions between Iraq and primarily the USA and other NATO members during the 1990s, and the subsequent Iraq War.
