Why was science and engineering more respected and valued during the "Cold War"?

Back during the Cold War Russia had things like this.

Now they are content with using an old 60s taxi cab "Soyuz". They can barely afford part of a space station. They can't build a heavy lift vehicle.

The Russian youth seemed obsessed with materialism.

And America.

Has society become too selfish to dream and aspire? Have youth become too afraid to get their hands dirty?

Not only that but the infrastructure is crumbling and society has become dumber. Conspiracy theories have become widespread.

I guess they balanced each other out

The world became very dangerous when the Cold War ended.
