Zone1 why oh why did the Europeans have to start so many colonies?

i'm wondering at the moment; why did the Europeans have to start so many colonies around the world after 1200AD?
it seems our current international conflicts all stem from these efforts, which might be reversable in the not too distant future, if people were just willing to do so.

The Christian west believed that it was their prophetic destiny to possess the lands of others.

and as a result of that "devout" behavior, we got the Dark Ages, and the invasion of lands far outside of Europe?!
look at what good such an attitude is doing for the Muslims in the modern age.
stuck in their stoning-for-adultery, executions for LGBTQ+ers, all in all also not exactly praise-worthy behavior if you ask me.
