The original theory behind the push for more testing was that if we knew who had the virus and who had been exposed to them, all of these could be isolated so there would be fewer for the rest of us to catch it from, but because the virus moves so fast in densely populated areas, testing and contact tracing has provided only very limited benefits. A better plan to protect the most vulnerable would be to isolate them in a virus free environment until we have effective vaccines and treatments.

That's 80 to 90 million seniors and medically vulnerable adults, that you've removed from the economy and workforce...

How can our economy.y be successful in any way, without them out and about and spending?

The best thing to do is isolate those sick, and everyone else is free to move about and spend. The infected are far fewer people to isolate than the 90 million vulnerable.

That's where massive testing comes in play.

Much of the economy is shut down now to accommodate social distancing rules and you can order almost everything online and have it delivered to your door now, so those in isolation can keep on spending. The economy would not suffer anymore than it is already by isolating the vulnerable, but many lives would be saved. Since most people who are infected with the virus are not sick, asymptomatic, isolating only sick people would not do much to stop the spread of the virus.

Indiscriminate widespread testing, identifies the asymptomatic, and isolating them, early on, is the key to saving lives and reduces community spread... is what I have read on it....

In theory, that's true, but it doesn't work in practice. To do that, you would have to test 330,000,000 people a day because a negative test this afternoon doesn't mean you won't be infect by the next morning. That's why testing continues to be restricted to people who have been sent by a healthcare professional and social distancing and masks are still necessary. When someone shows a positive test result, public health workers do contact tracing to identify people who may be at risk because of contact with the infected person, but testing everyone in the country is just not a practical idea.

The fact is, this will not end until we have effective vaccines and treatments and nearly all of the population has been vaccinated and that won't happen until next spring at the earliest. Until then, all we can do is a balancing act between saving the economy and saving lives.
