While the murder of anyone is always bad, this incident shows how all the gun control in the world doesn't ultimately matter since shotguns are almost never addressed. The incident would have still happened even if handguns and assault weapons had been banned or otherwise unavailable.

Plus, CNN at least is finally addressing these incidents not as a gun-control issue, but a mental health and general indifference to human life issue. Think when videogames are creating 'murder simulators' as "entertainment" (and famously the US Army used one such FPS as such) we're conditioning our young that guns and murder is a valid option for resolving disputes.

While it's true other countries without gun violence problems have the same content and thus the games aren't solely to blame, in a society with both easy gun availability AND 'murder porn entertainment' it's worth addressing if better forms of recreation and entertainment would be worth pursueing. Game/Movie ratings don't prevent underaged kids from viewing or obtaining them so shouldn't be relied upon to control access. A government mandate forbidding such things would however. And though the anti-censorship crowd would go indiscriminantly nuts, we have to ask ourselves if loosing graphic violence as "entertainment" is really so bad.

Nodal Hassan, the Ft. Hood shooter was from West Virginia which doesn't register party affiliation so he couldn't be a registered.

James Holmes, the Colorado movie shooter had no political affiliation.

Trying to pin mass shootings on Democrats is an epic fail. But there is ample evidence that a number of mass shootings which are politically motivated and carried out by white supremicists, and other right-wingers which you typically ignore and pretend don't exist.

This happened at a very public place - Columbia mall. It happened at the mall WHILE the mall was opened.

It is in a very good neighborhood, thus rather news-worthy compared to, say, Baltimore, where murders happen every week.

I believe that's the OPs point. Where murders happen every week, there are lots of guns and gun restrictions, it's not a story.

When a murder happens in a safe, white area, it's OMG, we have to care about shootings now!!!
