To hope for a regime change, by attacking a country and taking out leader in that country - it's just as likely to make people rally together against the external enemy, especially when its their long-time nemesis of Israel-America. Seems to me that you are not familiar with Iranian people. We have many in the USA---they started flooding out of Iran in the 1960s in response to rising islamism.. Neither the Usa or Israel is regarded by the scores I have known as THE NEMESIS

Here's how the elections go since Islam took over. The "Mullahs' (religious clerics) submit "their" list of political candidates to the Ayatollah. The Ayatollah reviews the list and if any are who he believes are too liberal, such individuals are taken off the list. He subsequently narrows down the list and those remaining are the ones put on the "public ballot." The general public don't have a choice as to who can be on the ballot, They just try to pick who might be the lesser of the evils.
As to the U.S. and Israeli involvement in attacking Iran, to this point, the U.S. only shoots down some of the missiles/rockets heading towards Israel. The U.S. has not fired into Iran as of yet. However, Iran has said that any nation that sides with Israel is a potential target, so moving more ships and troops to the area was necessary.
Any nation that won't back an ally because of threats isn't much of an ally, only what could be called a "fair weather friend."

Why didnt that happen after decades of war in Iraq? Why didnt it happen after Afghanistan?
