Why does the US government lying about unemployment?

The unemployment rate the government reports is looking only at the people who are collecting unemployment benefits. This number doesn't include... people staying at home to care for children, people who are disabled and unable to work, homeless people, people who are living off the largess of family members and simply not motivated to look for a job, and people who are still looking for work but their unemployment benefits ended.

Perhaps if you were to look at the participation rates and not the headline reports then you would see something closer to what you are looking for

I don't understand anyone who still thinks you can get the truth from government or the MSM.

Not how it is calculated. Educate yourself before spouting myths.

You are wrong. The unemployment statistics count those who are actively looking for work regardless of any benefits they may be receiving.

For the record, COVID introduced some previously unknown categories. We had two income families that scaled back to one income, then after COVID they decided that if the second person could find a great job, they would take it, but no crappy jobs.

Are they looking for work? It is not clear.

It is my opinion, the only one of those not counted, that is actually important and should be counted in the unemployment numbers is "people who are still looking for work but their unemployment benefits ended." I am not sure, how you would capture that one.

As for why does the Government lie about unemployment numbers, in general? Because it can, and can simply double down on the lie, even fire anybody that says different.

which in turn improves the numbers :-)
Improving the numbers by artificial ignoring the numbers does not address the problem. Would the problem be solved if he simply declared unemployment was officially Zero? No.

There are more than one unemployment rates which you are free to look up. The one most published is the U3 there is also the U6 and worker participation rate. No one is lying you jus dont understand the issue. A rate is broad indicator not a absolute number

What about people who have not had a job for year or more? Are they counted?

Should be, but only if still trying to find a job. If established, secure, having put back on last job, some people out of work, but looking a year later, simply unwilling to take multiple steps down before taking an available job that locks them in. I am not sure how you capture that number into unemployment numbers, but it does represent a deficit in available jobs. Sometimes, you might have to move to where the jobs are, whether you want to relocate to get a suitable position in your field or not.
