Governor Walker refuses to negotiate with the unions. The unions are willing to negotiate wages and benefits and share the sacrifice. We are all in trouble when one side refuses to deal with the other side in good faith. This Governor has a history of not dealing in good faith in previous positions. He also came in with a surplus and spent it on lobbyists and gave money for health care to people who don't need it. It only serves them as a tax shelter.
Take away collective bargaining and there is no union. Wisconsin has had public unions for over 50 years. They have a beautiful state and the public services have been a good value for the taxpayers.
I'm not concerned with this particular Governor's faith and currently ignorant of his history, both of which are beside the point.
Collective bargaining is fine in the private sector. (provided neither side is allowed the use of force or fraud) But public unions have been a disaster and a drain on every State for far too long including the fountainhead that is Wisconsin. (beautiful as it may be)
The government works both sides against the taxpayer and both are playing with house money. Taxpayers fund the government and the government union, and then the union uses it's money to fund the political campaigns (largely) only it's preferred party. Corruption is not just a bug, it's a feature.
