As far as Germans go, it's kind of easy to spot them once you see their name. But all of the German sounding named people I have met most have no clue as to their origins. I have worked with all sorts of people from all corners of the United states ever year we would get more and I have not seen them use the hyphen and most could care less. The polish jokes fly at people with ski in their last name. And it's easy to see puerto ricans because they have long hyphenated names and most Puerto Ricans do have a puerto rican flag in their car or at home. But most of the ones I have met are from puerto Rico. I do see Italian flags flying in pizza shops. But most younger kids are worried about getting a hot chick at the club then about their origins.

Although where I grew up some Italian Americans were very proud and I have seen Italian American crap on low brow tv shows. But for the most part I haven't seen what you say. unless they were first or second generation Americans then yes they do identify themselves with their homeland.

It is good to know your origins I suppose, I am not against it. And if white people are doing that where your at then maybe they are just trying to get under your skin? People love to do that if they can. Is it a superiority thing against your race or is it just to get you riled up? i know racism exists so maybe it's a little bit of both. Of course I was flight line so it wasn't an office environment. But people pick on people, and if it gets under their skin then that's where most nicknames come from. Hell even pilots do it, and most of their nicknames are funny. I have seen black guys tear into white guys and it was always funny, and vice versa. You just need thick skin on the flight line is all. No matter what color it is.

I have seen in the south the south will rise again tattoos and the flags and stuff. Your right some white people do take that stupid shit seriously in the south, but they are low brow. And it is always fun talking to them because it is so easy to make them look stupid. LoL

I suggest volunteering for crosswalk duty at any local school in your area. You will see a lot of the bad in human nature in the children and some of the good. But it is eye opening...

That method requires trust and unspoken permission in a lot of cases. Makes sense for you to use it in that capacity. I work with kids now and have before. They are not grown adults so I can understand them acting in such a manner. I think adults should teach children to be cognizant of the possibilities of offending or needling people for no good reason.

A melting pot is different than the E Pluribus Unum concept you used earlier. Please be consistent. The great thing about the US is you are not required to melt if you dont want to. If people take offense to that then thats their issue to deal with. I love being Black and I love my culture. I dont want to be vanilla. Yes, they are a democratic country but they push their poor and disaffected out into the jungle where they prey on the indigenous populations and slash and burn the Amazon rain forest. If they didn't have that pressure release valve the already incredible levels of violence would blow the country to bits. And, once again, they have a population that is mainly black.

The population of the US is black, brown, and white with all the racial tensions that that entails. Canada and Brazil are racially distinct. The USA is not.

I think I can answer this very easily, with a story from my Great-Grandmother.....

In 1980 my great-grandmother failed to return her census documents. She wasn't a big fan of the Federal Government and simply threw them out when they came. Several months later one of the census takers showed up at her door to "help" her complete her census. When asked for her Ancestory she answered AMERICAN. He tried to get a better answer from her, asking where her ancestors had come from, or if she was NATIVE AMERICAN. Her response..... "My family has been in this country for more than 300 years (they arrived in the 1650's). I'm not from anywhere but AMERICA at this point, and if you don't like that you can GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!!!" She then proceeded to chase the census taker out of her home with a broom.

See, when we white folks came here (either in 1650 or 1900 as my family dd), they did it beacuse they wanted to become AMERICANS. They wanted to SEPARATE themselves from wherever it was they came from and make a better life HERE. That's why so many whites only acknowledge ourselves as AMERICANS, whereas many Asians, Africans and Hispanics would really PREFER to live wherever they came from, but they find the US has more opportunities to better themselves. This leaves them of split mind and loyalties, thereby identifying themselves with the hypenated "-America" title.
