Why can't we solve the Asian carp problem.

I have done extensive research on this subject and have come to this conclusion. Everyone, including all of the environmental agencies, like to see them jump. They get a kick out of it and don't want to see it to end.

That's all.
It's too out of control. I saw a special on PBS the other day. The solution is America needs to eat these fish. But we don't like boney fish.

Do you know who caused this? Ronald Mother ******* Reagan. He deregulated the EPA's power to regulate the rivers and then new rivers and dams were put in and slowly the fish are making their way to the Great Lakes. And Republicans aren't about regulations so...we're fucked.

Asian carp (specifically bighead, silver, and black carp) pose a catastrophic threat to the Great Lakes by outcompeting native fish for food, potentially collapsing the $7 billion fishing industry and damaging the $16 billion boating industry. Their rapid reproduction, massive appetites, and ability to jump high when startled (silver carp) could fundamentally alter the food web and make recreational areas unusable.

**** you Ronald Reagan!!!

I don't think Ronald Reagan is preventing us from doing something about these fish. Just catch them and turn them into fertilizer or cat food. It's not rocket science.

Invasive species are are nearly impossible to eradicate once they get a foothold. Look at the pythons in Florida. The EPA cannot direct the massive boots on the ground efforts required, they only set regulations. Blaming Ronald Reagan for the Asian carp invasion is ridiculous.

Then you didn't do any research before you thought.

Asian carp, including silver and bighead species, were introduced to U.S. waters with government support but became invasive due to 1980s deregulation. While not directly responsible for the introduction, the Reagan-era EPA and policies shifted focus away from the research, allowing populations to spread, while Reagan signed the Coastal Barrier Resources Act.

The python problem is easily solved, just suspend "humane kill" rules. The Achilles heel of the jumping carp is that they jump and thus are easily caught.

That was then, this is now.

I wouldn't depend on PBS for solutions to anything.

Just drag a string of large flat bottom boats behind a power boat to catch the jumping carp. Repeat until the boats are full. Then dig a big hole and bury them.

You must be a real ******* retard.

Apparently I'm not alone.

I would try to catch them in a large gill nets floated on top of the water and dragged behind the power boats. You could catch virtually every fish in short order.

Easily solved? Uh uh. Maybe if they had gone all in at killing them early on. It's too late now, they lay 40 to 50 eggs per clutch.

They don't breed until they're 8 or 9 years old. Plenty of time to destroy the juveniles. Also, the females are very vulnerable when on a clutch of eggs.

I agree they should try but it appears the authorities appear to have already given up. They should implement a bounty on each snake AND each unhatched egg.

And every other fish. Bad idea. AI isn't wrong you are.

Clearly this asshole doesn't live on the Great Lakes or value it like people who do. Or he's a MAGA idiot who like Trump, only cares about the environment when windmills ruin his view at his golf courses.

15th post
Yes, that's what they do. It's still a problem. And we don't want them getting in the Great Lakes but they will get in thanks to Trump deregulations. Just like Reagan deregulations.
rent free.webp

I told you it's Reagan's fault. So I guess Reagan was living in my head as he let the Asian Carp in. An invasive species.

early 2025, the Trump administration pursued deregulation affecting the Great Lakes, primarily by scaling back Clean Water Act protections for wetlands and tributaries, easing rules on power plant emissions, and cutting funding for environmental research. These actions were part of a broader agenda to reduce environmental rules.

They actually have a bounty now and pay so much per foot of snake. However, they've turned the whole thing into a tourist attraction. The snake hunters come from far and wide and will spend more than they will make by catching snakes.
The authorities really don't give a shit about the ecology of the everglades.

Native species will recover. Lakes that are drained because of undesirable species are just restocked and recover nicely.

AI doesn't know shit about how to remove these fish.
