Exactly! The very first responses show why we arent able to compromise. The only party that says compromise is bad is republicans? The only party that routinely calls their own party members "wanna be's" aka Rhino's for not towing the line is republicans.

Then they project their unwillingness (for a variety of reasons) to compromise on the other guys. Like they havent been yelling "NO COMPROMISE" the whole time.

I mean, when Obama took office the republicans said they MAIN focus was to obstruct and to make Obama a one term POTUS before he enacted or proposed ONE THING.

And they havent stopped.

But of course what do the republicans do? Oh they just simply say its all the Dems fault without rhyme or reason and keep it moving.

Thats why we cannot compromise. Compromise is a bad word to Republicans and if you do you arent a "real" republican

Change the rules of the game and you change the strategies of the players. The rules of our politics have been radically changed starting in the1990s. At the core of the change has been a dramatic shift in focus to individual candidate fund raising and, at the same time, a spectacular increase in the amount of money needed to run for office.

The result of this shift has been a decline in the importance of national party leadership, because a politician that raises his own millions from wealthy donors over special interest issues doesn't need help from the DNC or RNC, and because s/he doesn't need the help, the politician doesn't need to obey the party leadership. Party discipline is at an all-time low.

Compromise is how democracy gets things done; but in the new, money-driven politics getting things done isn't nearly as important as preventing the other guy from getting things done. If a compromise is reached on an issue like gun control, welfare or the budget then neither side has that issue to fight over and without hot issues to fight over, neither side's members can raise the big bucks needed to win the election.

Our congresscritters aren't paid to reconcile any more than two prizefighters are paid to reconcile. Our politics is no longer the mechanism of governance, it has become an expensive professional sport that is all about winning and losing. This has produced paralysis, hysteria and some very bad legislation. But don't blame the players, they are doing what they have to do in order to win under the modern rules.

During the 1960s people were getting killed over civil rights, voting rights, and anti-war demonstrations. And then there was that whole civil war thing.

then why are our national elections virtually 50/50 every time? We do not agree. The country is very divided on partisan and cultural lines. We no longer have common goals and a common culture.

I can't speak for the liberal positions but can I give mine?

1) I'm anti-abortion except for health of the mother and rape. My compromise position is to use medical advances to push the "viability" provision as early as possible. While trying to convince as many as possible that a fetus is a human being who is entitled to protections under our legal system.

2) A pathway to citizenship that includes a fine that can be paid over time. Use the revenue to secure the borders so that we don't wind up in this same predicament again. Those who refuse this offer are subject to deportation.

3) Fix it.

4) Don't impose policies that are going to send Americans' energy costs even higher. It's doubtful that the U.S. alone can mitigate this while so many other industrialized nations are not on board. Most of our efforts are going to have to be focused on mitigating the adverse impact.

Positively is planting trees, reducing carbon etc...Negatively is increasing littering, allowing dumping of chemicals in oceans or streams. That shows that man does have an effect on the environment.
