Indeed, the US system flat out beat the crook. Trump won against the "political messiah" with half the funding and no establishment support to speak of. Victory for the American system of free enterprise.

I think the reason they've gone off the edge is two-fold:

First, they thought it was over, that the culture war was won and demographics were in the process of killing the GOP. Well, they jumped the gun there. There will still enough people who were repulsed by them that they thought their noxious behaviors wouldn't matter. It was OVER, and they were doing their victory dance.

And then to have Trump win, holy crap. That was rubbing salt in the wound and drove them off the cliff.

Now, before the GOP does its own victory dance, we'll find out pretty soon whether 2016 was a turning point or a last gasp. If I had to bet, I'd say it's the latter.
