You are supposed to pluck it first.
After killing them you dress them out (remove the innards) Then pour boiling water on the outside to loosen the feathers. And get to plucking. Nasty dirty job and feathers seem to go everywhere even when careful. The hairs then get singed off with a torch, gas flame or something. And you then have a cleaned bird ready to cook and eat.
