Who will lose out when ACA health insurance subsidies expire?

Premiums will double because the GOP refuses to extend the subsidies

And they’re willing to cut off SNAP to get their way
And 35 billion? That’s a rounding error considering the debt. Hell Trump is giving more than that to Venezuela

If that were true, if everyone was about to have their premiums doubled, which would make the out of pocket portion go from a few hundreds to thousands of dollars per month, the voters would ride the GOP out on a rail in 2026.

Is that your prediction? Massive losses by Republicans in 2026? Let's both bookmark this thread and come back to it in one year.

Let the extended subsidies expire, and insurance companies will have to lower their prices to something people can better afford.

That we have people paying $800 a month (or rather, insurance companies CHARGING that, and taxpayers subsidizing it) for what is essentially a catastrophic care plan is ridiculous.

Obama did the exact OPPOSITE of what should have been done.

Doesn't matter if the expanded subsidies expire the rates have been approved by states and CMS and at least for 2026 are written in stone.

According to Federal law, non-citizens are not entitled to enter and stay in the United States. Ask a Democrat if Immigration Laws should be enforced and they will deflect by simply acknowledging the Federal law but then say that every human deserves to be free from opposition and poverty. No where in between any of that does a a Democrat talk of enforcing the law.

This is the same game they play with Medicaid. Democrats will tell you in this debate that no illegals are entitled to Medicaid according to law. But then they tell you all humans should have access to healthcare.

Democrats are ******* with US.
I've often stated the murder is illegal as well. I guess that means there are no murders.

"Some 22 million Americans are set to lose health insurance subsidies by the end of the year. Who are they, and what will happen if the subsidies are allowed to expire?

These subsidies, known as enhanced premium tax credits, lower costs for people who buy their health insurance through Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces (sometimes called Obamacare). They are at the heart of a weeks-long standoff that has shuttered the federal government since Oct. 1. About 80 percent of the people who benefit from them live in states that Donald Trump won in the 2024 presidential election. Many have no idea that their health insurance costs are on track to go up.

Who benefits from the tax credit?

Almost everyone who got their health insurance through an ACA marketplace in 2025 received the enhanced premium tax credit, so describing the people who have ACA plans is a good way to get a sense of the people who get the credit."

Trump/Republican voters lose, as usual.

The stupidity of voting for Trump and Republicans.

The stupidity of voting against one’s own interests.
Most people vote their own interests than sabotage their lives by not caring for their health. Neither party can fix that. The only reason for the healthcare/insurance crisis is (drum roll) poor health.

If you asked the average overweight, pimply faced person on Obamacare why they think their insurance is so high they would likely answer Trump and the Republicans while stuffing their mouth with a "Little Debbie" snack cake.

Exactly. Democrats play this game all the time. They will tell you illegal immigration is not a problem because it is against the law. They will tell you that voter fraud does not occur because it is against the law.

And that is what they are doing here with illegals getting benefits. They say it does not happen because it is against the law.

I didn’t mean immediately. But if liberals stop insisting that the government pay the skyhigh rates that insurance companies are charging, and the bill falls to the individual, the rates will come down. Might take a year or two, but the trajectory were on now will just lead to a system where everyone is on low-covers age plans for which the government pays the insurance companies’ ridiculous rates.

California fraudulently overcharged Medicaid so they would have excess money for which to fund Illegal Alien Medicaid.

Exactly. Congress doesn't operate in a vacuum in deciding how much of a subsidy to give Obamacare marketplace enrollees.

Their congressional staffers talk with the executives of the health insurance providers and negotiate:

"If we get this much subsidy per person we will charge that much for out of pocket premium cost."

"What if we give you such and such per person, then how much would the out of pocket premium cost be?"

They come to an agreement strongly favorable to the health insurance providers. Then the health insurance providers hand over a fat donation check to a campaign staffer in the next room.

The Congress folk use those campaign donations to run ads bragging about how they kept the cost of health insurance premium down.

No matter what though, the insurance companies are not going to lose all of those customers by keeping their premium costs artificially high when the temporary subsidies are expired. They managed to keep their premiums affordable before the covid temporary subsidies. There is no reason to think they cannot do it afterward.

Yes. With ACA, insurance company profits are written in stone.

So you mean government decides how much profit private companies are permitted?
No. I mean ACA is a rigged game and the insurance companies will get theirs, at our expense. That was the entire point of the law. There's no fixing it short of repealing it.

They did just "repeal" it. They Defunded subsidies and it will collapse. But then all your people are against even that?

A big part of the problem is OVERINSURANCE. Insurance should be for major medical expenses, and there used to be policies called Major Medical. THAT is what people should have.

And then, for the routine things - a lab test for strep throat, A removal of a benign cyst, a stitch or two for a cut, etc. - should be cash pay. Watch the prices go down for these routine things where to people can pay for them out of what used to be called “a rainy day fund.”

Obama’s insistence that everyone be insured for every little bump and boo-boo has skyrocketed prices, makes it NECESSARY for people to buy insurance, and then with subsidies, allows the insurance companies to skyrocket their premiums.

Obama was an idiot.

This is how rates work. They first go to the state department of insurance for approval and then forwarded to CMS for approval. Yes, companies are making profits, huge? who knows as they have to pay at least 80% out on individual policy claims a year and so on.

It’s a vicious cycle. The insurance company has to pay out to cover medical costs that have skyrocketed to the roof because insurance covers them. We need LESS insurance, not more.

Remember how cheap LASIK was (and still is, I’m guessing). This was a big deal surgery that RESTORED PEOPLE’S VISION, and would have been $30,000 if insurance covers it. But it didn’t, so doctors charged $3,000.

And that's also a result of ham-handed government policy. We need stop trying to manipulate consumers, and just let the market work. For the most part, people will make prudent decisions - if government isn't involved trying to push them into doing something else.
