I actually find the term "Native American" offensive. My ancestors were of Cherokee and Choctaw descent. Our tribes were obliterated by white Europeans and our culture was erased and "whitewashed" over under the moniker "Native American." My ancestors were here LONG before America ever existed. Native Americans were the Pilgrims.

When I hear the term "Native American" it reminds me of the rich tribal cultures which were diluted and marginalized, trivialized and stereotyped into a monolithic parody by self-righteous white people. The intentions may have been honorable but it's an offensive slight that isn't any different than if we called people "Oriental Americans" regardless of whether they were Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, etc.

Actually, in a way it is the duty of the government to determine who is Native American or who is not. Since the government uses tax payer money to pay for education and schools for the Native Americans , they need to make a determination of who is actually a Native American, and who may be making the claim just for a college grant.

I disagree talking to my ex cherokee girl friend (I used to ask her a lot of questions because I was fascinated about it) she told me you had to prove to the tribe you were 1/8th to get casino profits ..
