Well with horizontal drilling they can reach targets diagonally instead of straight down drilling. Thus they can be 10 miles or more from the target and can hit the target. They also are able to move oil drilling platforms. They dig in one spot and once the oil and gas is flowing to the next process. They pack up and move it to another spot.

Things that old style drilling could not do. It was pretty much if your lucky to hit the right spot it was good until it was gone. That is why you see a lot of oil style rigs no longer pumping. Yes there are a few that still are.
