Depends on context. For example, a Jew is white when "White man slays mother on Long Island". But he is Jewish when "Jewish comic slays crowd in TriBeCa".

If it's to their advantage to be white, they claim white.
If it's to their advantage to claim Jewish/not-white, they claim Jewish/not-white.

The Jews are not white. They are a hybrid, mixed race, mostly of Middle Eastern origin but with some white and also some negro mixed in.

And yes, they claim whiteness when it suits them, they reject it when it doesn't. Same as with national identity. Notice how so many Jews claim today to be both American and Israeli. They are chameleons.
