Secondly, YOU might want to be led by a "strongman" but some of us understand how foolish it is to give the government even more power and control than they already have. But this was NOT a Whitehouse function or event? It was a Correspondence dinner for Whitehouse journalists and charity. The president may or may not, choose to go. He did not attend at all during his first 4 years as President and he did not attend his first year back in office. As president, this is his first year, out of the 6 times the event occurred while president, he chose to attend.

The ballroom being built has nothing to do with this event.

True the partly finished ballroom has nothing to do with the correspondence dinner, but since normally the president and others on his team normally show up, and Trump is building it for no cost to the taxpayer, a logical place to hold them, is in the Ballroom when finished.
