Which countries have an "Official Language" codified into their laws?

The U.S. is highly linguistically diverse, with over 350 languages spoken. While English is the most common, many Americans speak other languages. Making English the official language wouldn’t significantly change much, as most government documents, media, and publications are already in English. Translation services would likely still be available for common languages due to the country's diversity.

I think there are a lot more important things for congress to to than this.
I like the idea of cowards like brokeloser fuming and grumbling under his breath when some people ahead of him in line at the grocery store speak to each other in a language he doesn't understand. A language like ENGLISH.

Paranoid cowards like broke loser always think "they must be talking about me!" when 99 times out of 100 they are talking about the price of kale or some such. Once in a while its "why is that weirdo making faces at us?" Even better is when the broke loser type turns and looks at me expecting solidarity with his paranoia. If I'm in a good mood I'll just ignore it. If I'm not in a good mood, I'll return with a "what the fuck do you want?" look. That does it every time. I only really get pissed when the checkout person (rarely) acts rudely or demeaning to a person overtly because of something like race, or accent, or ethnicity. Then the checkout person shrinks two sizes as I read the riot act before demanding the manager. I reserve this option for only when absolutely necessary.

These migrants eventually learn English or at least their children do

Making English your official language does not mean you can force the woman behind you at the checkout line to speak English.

It means the Government will not publish official documents in other languages

Anyway, as to official languages in nations, as I recall, France is also one.

Nobody is saying they want to force that woman to speak English. But, people are under no obligation to be able to communicate with her in her language, either. So, when she comes up to my counter and gives me a 5 dollar bill for a 10-dollar item, and turns to walk out, I am calling the cops on her for robbery.

What it will do is disenfranchise people who speak another language from getting official information from the government.
If people want to get official info from the government, then they should learn English. They most certainly should not demand government accommodate them by printing official documents in another language.
