I said, that in 2001, there were no more Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and there were no Soviet Forces in Afghanistan or anywhere else. There were two big groups - Northern Alliance and Taliban. And in 2001 Russia saw Northern Alliance as lesser evil, and therefore, recognised Islamic State of Afghanistan, not Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (aka Taliban) as legal government of Afghanistan.
