If there's no personal information attached --- other than maybe the kid's name, it's probably all right.
You can use biometrics for unique identity (like one out of Millions) or just as a verification that's it's "always you".

The latter doesn't require FULL storage of features taken from the scan. Only enough to say it's you to a high degree of confidence.
