During the various riots which were occurring in the Middle East over his film, Nakoula stayed in hiding, and tried to spin a tale to the media by phone that he was an Israeli Jew and that the film had been financed by wealthy Israeli Jews. He was attempting to incite the angry Muslims to start killing Israelis.

During the filming, he did not tell the actors what kind of movie this was going to be, and he dubbed over completely different lines than he had given to the actors, thereby putting them unwittingly at risk, too.
