The shooter, and his family, were Mormons. Devout Mormons it appears. Kirk was a Christian Nationalist. Those two groups don't play well together. I mean it is true, Mormons and Christian Nationalists do share some common interests, conservative principals at the core. But they diverge strongly on other issues.

It has been said that the shooter discussed Kirk with his family, dinner table speak, or what those in the church call, "Family Home Meeting". While those on the right want to jump to the conclusion that conversation revolved around the LBTQ community, I would contend that is highly doubtful, maybe the family will be more forthcoming as the trial gets under way. It is more likely that the shooter was appalled by Kirk's Christian Nationalism.

For instance, Mormons hold dear the concept of Freedom of Religion and separation of church and state. For good reason, many members of the Mormon church have, historically, been persecuted in this country. They believe the founders created this nation for ALL religions, not just Christianity, Kirk's position flies in the face of that. Perhaps most of all, the Mormon church preaches civility, Kirk did not believe in that. The Mormon church preaches empathy, Kirk famously dismissed empathy even going so far as to proclaim it evil.
