the main thing Pope got wrong is - he applied his knowledge of the situation in the Third world to the First.

No, the problem is that the pope doesn't know the Truth. If he knew the Truth, he would sell everything he had until he was homeless and then, give to the poor, which means he would be preaching God's love to anyone who listens to Him for 42 months until the unbelieving Christians have his flesh killed.
