Here's my opinion. No lawyers, no sob stories about his drug addiction. Speedy trial. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, do not make the lawyers rich. This to be followed by speedy execution, or if that's too harsh, send the bastard to Alaska and put him a labor camp for the rest of his life.

There was a recent change in behavior that his parents were concerned about
Nick was not invited to the party but his parents were worried about leaving him alone.

Well maybe, if he is diagnosed as Schizo, but drugs can induce psychotic behavior so, was it possibly drug-induced? Or does he suffer permanent, organic damage? And if the latter, why was he not already diagnosed and undergoing treatment?

Due process. No execution as his father was almost surely against it. That would be kind anyway. Life in prison without parole if convicted.

With a strong insanity angle, there will probably be a plea deal

Have to see what the psych evals say

There is no sanity level, you are either criminally insane or you are not. There may be conditions to his incarceration but if he is a threat to society he will be in prison and remain there for a long time.

The fact he would kill his own parents tells us without meds, he is dangerous to society.
