I'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment and ask if FGM is anything different than other things we do in western society. We do one thing called circumcision for which there is no real medical purpose to other than a throwback to an ancient judea-christian custom that basically initiated men into jewish society. It is pretty foul if you think about it and I wonder if it is different than FGM. We use the word 'mutilation' to describe it but what if we just called it virginity surgery for girls. That wouldn't sound nearly as bad as 'mutilation' and considering that by changing a word makes it sound a little more acceptable to western society then would we object to it as much just because we changed the name?
Don't get me wrong because I think FGM is as bad as it sounds but I don't know if I would object to it as much if it was already an accepted practice like circumcision? In that case would we just think it is a normal procedure to do to girls or do we just like our women to be unrestrained sexually. Maybe we like our women all whore-eey and slutty-like so we don't surgically close their vaginas. Open vaginas are good...closed ones bad.
How come liberals don't bombard proponents of FGM with questions like 'if we are sealing a vagina shut for little girls why aren't we sewing a little boys penis to his scrotum so he can't do anything with it'? People who have supported traditional values in this country have been forced to re-examine double standards with regards to men and women sexuality so why isn't Islam have to subject to the same questioning?
